The Olympic Games are (as in ancient times) the most important event in the modern world. Not only it's the biggest sports contest, but also it is a symbol of peace and coexistence of all the races and cultures. A tradition that unites people from all over the world. An event that binds the past and the present, event of spectacular victories and breathtaking spectacles. And Greece, land where it all began, a cradle of european civilisation that still emanates with an antique atmosphere. This is what we tried to express in our project.
Situation
The site is located in the very centre of Athens, and due to a great view opening to the Acropolis it has a tremendous value itself. Our idea was to preserve the atmosphere of the site, create something that wouldn't compete with the ruins, that would rather emphasise the existing features of the city and site, than implement some new aesthetics and agressive forms.
Concept
The idea for the project was mainly based on what we felt was a problem of Athens: insufficiency of public spaces; therefore we decided to make the public space as big as possible. Apart from that, the site level is about 3,5 m below the street level (according to the map) so it came naturally to put most of the museums cubature on the ground level, and above it a public space matching the street level. Sort of an inversion of a building.
To separate the public space from buildings on the east, we've inserted an inverted version of the interior space on the eastern side of the site, creating a garden made of boxes and trees, sort of a semi public space for the visitors.
As for the plaza, the idea was to show the spirit of olympics and sport itself and make it available for every person passing near the plaza, so we came up with 3d holographic displays. It was inspired by the very idea of the ancient olympics, to entertain and unite people. Everybody can see this exhibition and feel the dynamics of great moments in the history of Olympic Games.
