[edit] Introduction

The skyscraper by Herzog and de Meuron includes 145 residential condominiums located at the intersection of Church Street and Leonard Street in Tribeca Historic District of downtown Manhattan, at 56 Leonard Street.

This is the first skyscraper to be built by the Swiss team, although they have faced bigger projects (at least in the urban and social realms), so far they have never had the opportunity to experiment with the construction of American excellence, and the best place for its debut is New York City.

The cost of the apartments varies between 3.5 to 33 million dollars.

[edit] Location

The exact location of the site is at number 56 Leonard Street in New York's popular Tribeca neighborhood, like many others, it emerged in the image of revolutionary Soho.

The plot consists of 12,954 square meters, of which only 3,810 square meters are taken up by the building. The ground floor is divided as follows: 563 square meters of business premises, 2,956 square meters for a gym, theatre, and other services.

[edit] Concept

The different levels of the building are rotated about the central axis and each of them is cantilevered, which generates a series of balconies that look like a big pile of glass "Legos". The irregular disposition of the floors causes each floor to be different.

The corbels of the building offer a jagged silhouette, which can be seen from miles around, even in the midst of the great buildings that comprise the Tribeca district of Manhattan.

[edit] Spaces

At street level, the two-stories lobby features a brilliant sculpture made of stainless steel by artist Anish Kapoory. The sculpture resembles a large drop of mercury that is trying to slip into the building. This is the first sculpture of the English artist to be exhibited on a permanent basis in New York City.

On the second floor is a private parking garage.

The next 4 stories, which architects have referred to as "The Townhouses" are articulated so that they relate to the immediate context as well as recreational areas, including a pool and a covered terrace, a cinema, a conference room and a gym.

The last 9 of the top levels, which give the appearance that they were simply stacked, are the 10 Penthouses ranging from 1,112 to 1,944 square meters each.

Herzog and de Meuron have commented that their intention with this design was that users of this building can establish a dialogue with the outside world, with small houses and old buildings. But for many of the inhabitants of New York, this structure like many others that have been designed in recent years will make the city a space similar to the images of Bladerunner.

[edit] Structure

The structure appears chaotic from the outside, but it is very simplified to make the corbels of some floors to offset perfectly with those of others, keeping the center of gravity in the center of the building.

The main structure is made of reinforced concrete.

[edit] Materials

The materials for the houses include Thassos and travertine marble that complements the exterior of glass and reinforced concrete.

The items inside, such as the sculptural white enamel and steel chimneys accentuate the shape of the plant. And the rolling kitchens lacquered in black are the counterpoint to the orthogonal geometry of the flats.
